Honoring America's Veterans 2005

On October 15, 2005, Sagamore Chapter was proud to honor America's military veterans by
planting a swamp white oak tree and placing a granite marker in Ironwoods Park in Leawood, Kansas.
The tree and marker were dedicated in ceremonial fashion with a band from an area high school and
beautiful operatic version of "America." A color guard provided by Delaware Crossing Chapter, Sons of
of the American Revolution. In attendance were DAR state officers and honoraries, Regents and members
of area DAR chapters, and Sagamore chapter members. Also attending were area dignitaries, including the
Mayor of Leawood, who gave the keynote address, and military personnel from Whiteman Air Force Base.

Some Other Things We Do...

In September, we create a Constitution Week display at Town Center Library in Leawood.
Every December, we donate time ringing bells for the Salvation Army.

Throughout the year, we participate in Naturalization ceremonies for new American Citizens.
We support DAR Schools by sending soup labels for education and by donating items for their thrift stores.

We are very committed to our veterans and provide personal items to hospitalized vets at the Leavenworth VA Hospital, and also conduct bingo parties for them. We participate in Operation Stand Down, helping homeless vets.
We believe our youth are our future and conduct an annual American History Essay Contest and select Good Citizens Award recipients from area schools. We also support C.A.R., Children of the American Revolution.

Ten members of Sagamore served as docents for the Ensor Farmsite and Museum during the weekends of August 2005. It is located southwest of Olathe and was the home of Marshall Ensor, ham radio opeerator and woodworking master teacher in Olathe. The farm features the family home and several outbuildings amid a lovely acreage. This project was a fundraiser for the chapter besides educating those who served as to the historical value of this site, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
