Polly Ogden Chapter DAR was organized in Manhattan, Kansas, on April 9, 1912. The chapter was named for the great grandmother of the Organizing Regent, Elizabeth Hoyt Purcell. Polly Ogden was the wife of Ebenezer Cole, a Minute Man in the American Revolution. In 1926, the chapter teamed with the Riley County Historical Society to erect a large monument at the site of the old Bluemont College. The marker is located at the corner of College Avenue and Claflin Road in Manhattan. When it became known that the grave of the city's first paid school teacher, Amanda Arnold, had no headstone, the chapter donated to the marker. The chapter annually awards two ROTC medals: one to Air Force, one to Army at Kansas State University. An awards ceremony is held at KSU. Flags of the USA were furnished for the two newest middle schools in Manhattan, as well as for the KSU entrance at Belmont Avenue. Polly Ogden Chapter is active in the community, and donated a flag to Seven Dolors Elementary School. America's veterans are important to the chapter. Members bring items to each meeting to be sent to the veterans at the VA Eastern Kansas Health System in Topeka. Polly Ogden Chapter DAR has regular monthly meeting September through May. The meeting day is normally on Saturday and times vary. Prospective members are welcome to attend. Please email us for more information, using the link below.
