The Neodesha Chapter DAR was organized in Neodesha, Kansas, on February 18, 1914. The name is of Indian origin, meaning, "Meeting of the Waters." The Verdigris and Fall Rivers merge just west of town, continuing as the Verdigris River.
World War I was a time of great service work for DAR and also for the Neodesha Chapter. The chapter organized the county unit of the American Red Cross in 1917. All other DAR work was put aside to help the soldiers however the chapter could. Each member contributed ten cents per meeting, and refreshments were dispensed with, in order to raise more funds for the Red Cross and the war effort. The work of the American Red Cross in the county was published by a chapter member, and a copy is located in the Library of Congress.
Dedication to America's servicemen did not end with World War I. In 1951, markers were dedicated to those who served in World War II and World War I from the area. Today, a flag is flown on appropriate occasions to honor all servicemen and the chapter traditionally participates in the local Veteran's Day parade.
To honor the chapter's 70th anniversary, the chapter contributed towards the repair of the Norman No. 1 oil well, a National Historical Landmark. A large flag was purchased to fly on the roof of the "Old Golddust Hotel" in Fredonia, when the historic structure was restored.
Neodesha Chapter is an active chapter that has provided leadership to other levels of DAR. Members are interested in all the service work of the organization, and the chapter honors all heroes of American Revolution, regardless of race, color, or creed.
A big occasion for the chapter is the State Regent's visit. Shown here, the chapter co-hosted the visit, along with Esther Lowrey Chapter and Jane Dean Coffey Chapter.
Meetings are held at 2:00 p.m. on the second Friday of the month, September through May. Prospective members are welcome to attend. Please contact us for more information, using the link below.
