Daughters of the American Revolution

Ulysses, Kansas

Byrd Prewitt Chapter organized on December 4, 1940, in Ulysses, Kansas. The Organizing Regent was Mrs. David Forshee, who was a direct descendant of Byrd Prewitt. Byrd Prewitt served with the Virginia Regiment and, after his discharge from the regular army, served again for nine months in the Virginia Militia. He was granted a pension in 1828, at age 75, for his services in the American Revolution.

During World War II, the chapter joined the war effort and knitted sweaters, made bandages and kit bags, and helped sell war bonds. Our commitment to American servicemen and women continues to this day. The chapter helped to place the names of servicemen from Grant and Seward counties in the Eisenhower Memorial in Abilene, Kansas. In 2001, we participated in promoting the brick "walk of honor" at the Veteran's Memorial in Ulysses. To honor the Patriot for whom the chapter is named, contributions were given to place the stained-glass windows in the Cotillion Tower at Valley Forge.

A significant interest of the chapter is education and promoting patriotism in our youth. The chapter has honored many outstanding high school seniors with the Good Citizen award, and honored all the students who have participated in the American History Essay Contest over the years.

The chapter has looked for opportunities to place American flags and has given both large and small flags to new citizens, new DAR members, students, and many public locations.

The chapter is interested in area history. In 1996, we helped relocate and rededicate DAR Santa Fe Trail Marker #84-A, which commemorates the route located by Francis X. Aubry, a Santa Fe trader. Aubrey’s new route ran between the Arkansas and the Cimarron rivers, but didn't go through the Jornada. The marker is located between the Fort Aubry Trail and the Aubry Cut-off in Hamilton County.

Our chapter is working to meet the challenges of change, and keeping our enthusiasm high for "God, Home, and Country."

The chapter holds regular meetings through the year. Meeting days and times vary; we've discovered we love to take field trips! Prospective members are welcome to attend our meetings and events. Please contact us for more information, using the link below.
